What is Botox?
Botox is a substance originally used for treating muscular disorders of the eye, but has also been found useful as a reversible muscle relaxant. The Botox is a neurotoxin that inhibits the neurotransmitters by blocking the nerve signal that results in uncontolled tighting or muscle movement. It may be used to temporarily relax certain facial muscles, thus having a cosmetic effect by smoothing certain facial wrinkles. The Botox injection of the BotulismTtoxin Type A is administered intramuscularly by Dr. Schultz.
When are the effects of Botox seen and how long do they last?
The effect of Botox begins in a few days and lasts for 3 to 6 months. At which time, retreatment may be necessary to gain a similar muscle relaxant effect. Generally the first treatment last 3 to 4 months, then most patients go 6 months between maintenance treatments.
Are there any side effects from receiving Botox?
Studies have shown that, in rare cases, a patient may develop antibodies to Botox in as few as three doses, thereby reducing its effectiveness. Thus, Botox may occasionally not have the planned affect or the results may not be as anticipated. Dr. Schultz has not seen this rarity in any of his patients.
At the office of Dr. Charles Schultz, we do provide botox injections. We use BOTOX® Cosmetic produced by the Allergan company. Dr. Schultz trained extensively in cosmetic facial surgery during his residency. For several years he provided cosmetic surgery to Juneau patients including rhinoplasty, blepharoplasty, lip enhancement, submental liposuction, endoscopic forehead lifts and chemical peels. Dr. Schultz has recently limited the cosmetic treatment in his office to Botox and Collagen treatments.
